Zverev eliminated in the second round of the US Open

German Alexander Zverev, number 6 in the world, was surprisingly eliminated in the second round of the US Open by Croatian Borna Coric (61st) on a poor Wednesday for Brazil, who saw Thiago Monteiro and Thomaz Bellucci bid farewell to the tournament.

The youngest of the 20-year-old Zverev brothers arrived in New York as a title favorite after winning five trophies in 2017, including two Masters 1000s in Rome and Montreal.

Zverev, however, could not deal with the consistency of the 21-year-old Coric's square bottom and another representative of the new generation of tennis, who won a four-set split, 3-6, 7-5, 7-6 , 7-6, within two hours and

Coric, who had never reached the third round of the US Open, will now face experienced South African Kevin Anderson (32nd).

Earlier, world No. 8 Austrian Dominic Thiem and another possible title contender did not disappoint, debuting at the US Open with a quiet win over Australian Alex de Minaur (186th) in the final, 6-4, 6-1, 6-1.

The match had begun on Tuesday but the incessant rain in New York forced the two tennis players to stop the duel after the second set, when Thiem already won by 2 sets to 0.

This Wednesday, the Austrian does not seem to suffer with the pause in the duel and resumed the game presenting the same level of the day, closing the last partial with new 6-1, in less than 30 minutes.

In the next round, Thiem, Roland Garros semifinalist this year, will face American Taylor Fritz (108th).

- Brazilians eliminated -

For Brazil, Wednesday was disappointing, with the elimination of the last two Brazilian players in singles.

In a 3-hour and 46-minute marathon, Thiago Monteiro was eliminated by Tunisian Malek Jaziri, adding to the frustration of the Brazilian team in the competition, which already had the falls of Rogério Dutra Silva and Bia Haddad on the first day of matches.

Thiago started very well the first set, decided in the tie-break in favor of the Tunisian, and crossed moments of oscillation in the game. Jaziri had two match points in the fourth set, but the Brazilian recovered and forced the fifth set.

Defeated and with the opponent very connected, Thiago ended up defeated, partial 7-6 (7/5), 4-6, 6-3, 5-7 and 6-4.

Thomaz Bellucci also failed to qualify. The Brazilian was easily dominated by German Dustin Brown, who won with partial dressers 6-4, 6-3, 6-2.

"I was too late in the balls, I do not know what happened, and he played very aggressively," said Bellucci.

Australian Nick Kyrgios, nicknamed "ATP youngster", was defeated by compatriot John Millman at the US Open.

Kyrgios, 14th key to the competition, lost to the world number 235 by 6-3, 1-6, 6-4 and 6-1. The controversial 22-year-old suffered from right elbow pain from the third set.

The departure of Kyrgios makes it easier for Roger Federer to find him in the round of 16.
- Sharapova and Venus advance -

In the female key, the experienced Maria Sharapova and Venus Williams followed the good tennis presented in the debut and advanced to the third round.

Sharapova kept the foot in the return to the dispute of a Grand Slam tournament since returning from the suspension by doping and won by turning the Hungarian Timea Babos of turning in three sets, partial of 6-7 (4/7), 6-4, 6-1.

In the next phase, the Russian will face the American Sofia Kenin.

Venus, the 9th seed and US Open champion in 2000 and 2001, passed the French Oceane Dodin in two sets, 7-5, 6-4.

The 37-year-old American, the most experienced player in the tournament, will take the lead in the third round with Greek Maria Sakkai (95th).
