Suspect accused in connection with disappearance of girl in France

A man has been charged with kidnapping and placed in provisional detention in connection with the disappearance of a nine-year-old girl during a marriage in the Alps, a French prosecutor said.

Maelys de Araujo was last seen in the early hours of Sunday 27 August in a room where the wedding took place in Pont-de-Beauvoisin, a town about 50 kilometers north of Grenoble.

A 34-year-old man has been charged with "abduction, illegal confinement or arbitrary detention of a minor under 15 years" following the police investigation, the Grenoble prosecutor said in a press release released on Sunday.

The man was at the wedding during which the girl - who was attending the event with her parents - disappeared, the statement said.

Maelys, who has dark brown hair and brown eyes, has not been seen since.

The man indicted is one of two suspects who were detained on Thursday for inconsistencies in their statements, but were later released Friday night.

"Facing witnesses, conclusions and scientific evidence, he persisted in his denials and explanations," the statement said.

"That did not convince the investigative judges, who decided to keep him" detained, he added.

"After the debate ... between the prosecutor and the defense," the man was placed "in provisional custody," the statement added.

Since the disappearance of the girl, the investigators make intense searches, without success. They also questioned about 250 people attending the wedding and two other festivities that took place in the village of 3,500 people.
